This Textile Website has been created as the final part of a two-year research and cataloguing project on the Museum's clothing and textiles collections (April 2004 to March 2006). It provides an overview of the diversity and strength of these collections, highlighting particular examples from Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. As part of the project four temporary exhibitions were created in a specially refurbished area in the main anthropology gallery. They showed Pacific barkcloths, Ghanaian Kente Cloths, ancient Peruvian textiles and Canadian Inuit clothing. On-line versions of these displays are included in this website as well as detailed sections on Tibetan Thangkas and Cypriot costume.
It is intended to update this website by providing new information on changing displays and incorporating the results of ongoing research.
The Textile Project has been generously funded by a grant from the Designation Challenge Fund with additional assistance from the Crowther-Beynon Fund, University of Cambridge.
